Antique Katazome Futonji - Cranes and Noshi
Faded with lovely antique character this indigo katazome (stencil resist dyed) panel measures 34cm x 120cm and is double-sided . Cranes and noshi ribbons were traditional auspicious motifs for trousseau items such as futon cover fabrics (futonji) and furoshiki wrapping cloths. Although futonji only needs to be one-sided they often stencilled the rice paste resist on both sides of the fabric as a precaution against the dye bleeding into the white pattern. As it is, there are some imperfections in the dyeing of this piece but I think that adds to the warmth of its character. It is in generally good condition but has a couple of very small holes. Late 19th - early 20th century.
