A panel from an antique katazome futon cover (futonji). Single-sided, handwoven, measuring 35cm x 178cm This is a busy , swirling chrysanthemum and karagusa (Chinese grass) design with a slightly paisley/middle-eastern feel. Katazome ('stencil dyeing') is created by stencilling a rice paste resist before dyeing with indigo. The pinky colour is stencilled on afterwards. This piece is in very good condition with no holes, marks or patches. There is a little bit of irregularity in the fading. The degree of overall fading can be seen by comparing the dark shade of indigo in the seams. Late 19th - early 20th century.
