Old but unused Clover brand. Kukedai is used to secure a kakehari third hand which can be used to hold your fabric taut while doing unshin or sashiko stitching. When Japanese were sitting on tatami mats to sew it was attached to a wooden kukedai stand or the neck of a sewing box. When more people began using western style tables and chairs it was attached to the table by a small metal kukedai like this. Clover still makes kukedai but this one looks like it is mid- 20th century and was labelled for use in schools. Even though it is unused there is a little bit of flaking on the pincushion attachment.
