Sakiori Sodenashi Vest

Sakiori rag weaving is usually associated with northern Japan  but was done in other parts of the country as well. This sodenashi (no sleeve) vest is from the Sada-Misaki peninsular in Ehime prefecture on Shikoku where there was a strong sakiori  tradition up until  around the early post-war period when, like other folk textile traditions,  it fell out of everyday use. This is in beautiful  un-used condition and probably dates from the mid-20th century . It measures 50cm across the shoulders and is 70cm long. To be honest if you're  thinking of buying it to wear these are very stiff and don't sit nicely on the shoulders!  But it  is a  terrific example of an important Japanese weaving tradition that is lovely to display.
