Antique Sashiko Sodenashi Vest

This sodenashi ( 'no sleeves') farmer's work vest is  from the Shonai region of Yamagata prefecture in northern Japan.    It's a wonderful authentic example of the original use of sashiko to quilt  layers of fabric together for strength, warmth and durability.  

The body of the vest is made from a double layer of plain indigo cotton with lines of vertical sashiko stitching. The lines of stitching are about 1cm apart except for the more densely stitched  underarm gussets where the stitches are about 5mm apart, The whole of the garment is sashiko stitched and the kasuri fabric has been stitched over top of that. This top layer would be replaced when it was worn out from carrying and pulling loads.   It's in  generally good sturdy  condition.  The collar is worn and there is one small hole in the kasuri on the back,  There is slight wear on the back and some lines of fading on the front from how it has been worn or stored. 

This is most suitable for display.  It measures approximately 45cm x 75cm.  Early - mid 20th century.
