This wonderfully shabby piece is a reminder that boro literally means rags - and that most of the everyday mending and re-use of textiles that happened probably didn't look like what we see curated for galleries and books! This is a very humble cloth made from an unpicked kimono with patches of kimono lining and other random pieces of old cotton. Holes, stains , and general disrepair. It measures 165cm x 2m. This may have been used as a futon cover or as a useful general purpose cloth for wrapping etc. It's looking forward to being given a new life. Mid 20th century.
