crane-and-turtle-tsutsugaki-furoshiki
Crane and Tortoise Tsutsugaki Furoshiki

Mid - late 19th century indigo dyed furoshiki wrapping cloth with auspicious crane and tortoise design. 67cm x 72cm. This would have been part of a bride's trousseau. It is dyed by the tsutsugaki ('cone drawing') method where a rice paste resist is hand drawn on the cloth with a tsutsu cone (a bit like using a piping bag) before being dyed.

The original stitching on the edges is only intact on one edge. It has been repaired with a sewing machine at some point and that has also come undone. It's interesting to note the white undyed marks where the stitching has come undone - showing that it had been stitched before it was dyed. There is a 6cm tear on one edge and some small marks and imperfections, but the fabric is sturdy and overall in good condition. A charming, characterful piece to display.

Price includes GST and express postage within Australia
