Edo Period Uchishiki Altar Cloth (2)
This is a silk brocade (probably Nishiki brocade) uchishiki Buddhist altar cloth. It measures 165cm x 97cm and is in stunning condition for its age (but will still prefer to be stored or displayed away from sunlight). This is a gorgeous, rare treasure.
These cloths were usually donated to temples with details recorded on the back. I can't translate all of the text I'm afraid except the date on the right hand side - which is June 1829 (12th year of Bunsei) . There is another date on the left hand side which I can't read but is also June, so possibly another version of the same date. The text down the centre says xx uchishiki (altar cloth) and the name of the donor Mr Nakajima ( I can't read his first name).
