Four embroidered thimbles (shishu-no-yubinuki). Many small decorative and sometimes practical crafts (saiho-osaikumono) developed in the Edo period (1600-1868) as a way for women of leisure to use up their silk kimono fabric and thread remnants. I don't know much about the history of thimbles but handmade ones such as this usually fall into that category. These were sold to me as being only 40 - 50 years old. The fabric is older than that but it's difficult to date them as the patterns haven't changed, but that's probably about right.
