Indigo Shibori Yukata Bolt (1)
A full bolt of vintage indigo shibori dyed 100% cotton yukata fabric - with original Chidori ('plover') Shibori labels. Probably from the Arimatsu or Narumi areas of Nagoya which are the traditional centres of indigo shibori. There is some foxing/age marks. When strectched and flattened would measure approx 35cm x 11 metres with a simple, dynamic design of vertical lines. Mid -20th century.
Old bolts of shibori cotton usually come like this and would have to be flattened out to make into a yukata (summer kimono). The instruction label says to wash to remove the lye from dyeing and then stretch out on rods or wrap around a pole to flatten out - and not to iron. However, if you don't have a suitable pole handy it is possible to iron these out to regular kimono width. If you prefer to use it as-is for something like scarves please note that the texture will drop out eventually even if you don't wash or iron it. You might also have some crocking - indigo rubbing off on other clothes or your skin. Lots of other possibilities for this simple dynamic design
