large-tsutsugaki-furoshiki
Large Tsutsugaki Ceremonial Furoshiki

Mid - late 19th century indigo dyed furoshiki wrapping cloth. It is a dramatic design of an auspicious pine with the moon behind it and a little touch of wisteria. It is dyed by the tsutsugaki ('cone drawing') method where a rice paste resist is hand drawn on the cloth with a tsutsu cone (a bit like using a piping bag) before being dyed. It is very large (158cm x 160cm) and has the inscription 世話人 沖島氏 'Steward: Mr. Okishima' which suggests it was made as a ceremonial item for a local organisation or guild rather than domestic use.

The original stitching on the edges is only intact on one edge. It has been repaired with a sewing machine at some point and that has also come undone. It's interesting to note the white undyed marks where the stitching has come undone - showing that it had been stitched before it was dyed. It is very faded and there is a 6cm tear on one edge and some other small patches, tears, and imperfections, but the fabric is sturdy and overall in good condition. A rare, striking display piece.

Price includes GST and express postage within Australia

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0342/4740/9797/files/antiquetsutsugakifuroshiki_2_500133c0-af52-4cbe-aa1b-784f763721f9.jpg?v=1788137120
