Leopard Skin Design Meisen Silk
Leopard skin design meisen silk that dates from mid 20th century. Meisen is nearly always older than it looks! 36cm x 6.5 m. It is a machine woven ikat that was developed in the late 19th century. It's very much associated with fashionable young women of the 1920's and 30's and was the most common non-formal kimono fabric of the period. It had a brief revival after the war but because it wasn't suitable for formal wear it declined in popularity as kimonos came to be worn primarily for ceremonial occasions. It is quite a stiff silk with a crisp feel.
