Late 19th - early 20th century hand-woven, hand-dyed indigo cotton furoshiki wrapping cloth. Approx 130cm x 130cm , it is a deep rich, inky indigo. The corners have been reinforced with sashiko stitching before it was dyed. Large wrapping cloths like this were used for carrying and storing all manner of goods. With a kamon family crest in the centre it may have been made to transport a bride's trousseau to her new home. It has little stretching or wear so it hasn't had a hard life. The paulownia kamon has been hand drawn with a rice paste resist before dyeing (tsutsugaki method). It's not the finest example of tsutsugaki but has it's own rustic charm!
