Oshie (lit. 'press picture') is a traditional padded applique technique done on a paper backing. Its origins date back to the the Heian period but it became a popular pastime among wealthy women in the late Edo period (1600-1868). These women had time on their hands and access to kimono remnants to use in their craft work. Many oshie were attached to sticks which could be inserted into a wooden base for display.
These oshie have been part of a hina matsuri (Girls' Day ) display and date from late 19th - early 20th century. They are all in ok condition apart from bad insect damage to their faces.. Price is for seven. Please check the photos carefully!
