Pre-war Ejiko Kokeshi Doll

This rare ejiko kokeshi doll  is signed by the  Naruko kokeshi maker Okazaki Hitoshi (1897 - 1982)  and a purchaser has added the purchase date (Showa)14.10.24  (24th October, 1939) and 'Naruko'.  It's approximately 8cm tall and the diameter at the  widest point is approximately 8.5cm. It's faded and has some marks as you'd expect from such an old kokeshi. 

 Ejiko kokeshi dolls are based on traditional  baby baskets of northern Japan. These were used so the baby could be left safely while you were working in the fields nearby.  They were  filled with straw and sometimes ash  which could be easily cleaned out.
