Tsutsugaki Indigo Panel
This has originally been the central panels of a futon cover. The dynamic kamon family crest suggests that it was part of a bride's trousseau. This design is called meyui ( 'eye tie') and resembles a shibori- dyed pattern. The pattern at the bottom is maples leaves and water. Tsutsugaki is a process where the design is hand-drawn in rice paste with a tsutsu cone before dyeing. Because the cloth is dyed multiple times rice paste can also be applied at any stage to preserve the lighter shade of indigo. This creates the wonderful contrast between the two shades of indigo and the stark white outline. This piece measures 140cm x 66cm and has some patches on the bottom half. The photo shows these patches on the reverse side. Late 19th - early 20th century.
