This has been a purely utilitarian work jacket made entirely from indigo cotton. It has numerous patches and also worn areas that haven't been patched, and some marks. This could have been any kind of workman's jacket - farmer, fisherman, urban labourer. It is the kind of garment that would have been a common sight on any street in pre-war Japan or even later.
