Antique Silk Shibori Woman's Nagajuban Undergarment.

Up until the middle of the 20th century  both men and women's kimono undergarments and linings were often much  brighter and/or more interesting than the the main garment. This  tradition dates back to Edo period sumptuary laws which tried to restrict what fabrics, colours and patterns you could wear depending on your social position, rather than your budget. Vibrant shibori-dyed  silks  which would  have been considered too bold for outer garments became popular for nagajuban undergarments.

This lovely piece is not in perfect condition.  There are some repairs, marks, and  small holes.  It measures 126cm from shoulder to hem and 128cm from cuff to cuff.  It's not  very sturdy or  washable but could possibly withstand some elegant swanning and would definitely make a  beautiful display piece!  Late 19th - early 20th century
