Cherry Bark Geta

These men's geta are decorated with kabazaiku which literally means 'birch craftwork' but is actually made from cherry bark. The design is  fuki (butterbur) leaves- a wild vegetable found all over Japan.   Kabazaiku dates back to the late 18th century when it  became a side business for low ranking samurai.  Even though it has been done in other parts of Japan it is primarily  associated with Kakunodate in Akita prefecture where it is still being made today.  I've had a beautiful cherry bark tea caddy for many years but hadn't seen the geta before  - they're quite stunning.  I don't think this pair is very old and doesn't show signs of much wear.  Approximately 24.5cm x 12.5cm
