There are many regional variations of Anesama ningyo (lit. 'big sister dolls'). These ones are from Matsue in the Izumo region of Shimane Prefecture. They were sold at markets and show three traditional hairstyles. Unlike many small Japanese dolls they don't seem to have any protective purposes and were playthings for girls. In their original box.
