Antique Sashiko Sodenashi Vest

This sodenashi ('no sleeves') farmer's work vest is from the Shonai region of Yamagata prefecture in northern Japan.    It's a wonderful example of the original use of sashiko to quilt layers of fabric together for strength, warmth and durability.   The dense lines of sashiko create a sturdy leathery character. The zigzag pattern of alternately patches of vertical and horizontal stitching is typical of Shonai sashiko. This one is a little more roughly stitched than some I've seen, with quite large knots on the inside!  The whole of the garment is sashiko stitched and the striped fabric has been stitched over top of that.  This top layer would be replaced when it was worn out from carrying and pulling loads.   It's in good sturdy condition.  

This is most suitable for display.  It measures approximately 49cm x 73cm.  Early - mid 20th century.
