Embroidered Thimbles

 A collection of 19 very finely embroidered thimbles (shishu-no-yubinuki).  Many small decorative and sometimes practical crafts (saiho-osaikumono) developed in the Edo period (1600-1868) as a way for women of leisure to use up their silk kimono fabric and thread remnants. Hand stitched thimbles such as these fall into that category.  I think this set dates from mid 20th century.  They came to me as a set in this damaged cardboard box and were most likely stitched by the same person - they're all as intricately stitched.
