Kakehari and Kukedai Set

A kakehari is often called a third hand in English.   It can be used to hold your fabric taut while  doing unshin or sashiko stitching (but isn't essential. It's tied to the  kukedai clamp and attached to  a table or bench.    When  sitting on  tatami mats to sew, the kakehari was attached to a wooden kukedai stand or the neck of a sewing box.  The small metal kukedai  was developed when western style  tables became more common.
