Katazome Panel - Cranes and Pine Trees

Cranes and pine trees are common auspicious motifs on katazome (stencil resist dyed) fabrics designed for futons that were part of a bride's trousseau.  This remnant piece measures 35cm x 57cm.   Dark indigo with brown and grey stencilled accents.   It's double -sided, without the accent colours on the reverse.  Although futon fabric only needs to be one-sided they often stencilled the rice paste resist on both sides of the fabric as a precaution against the dye bleeding into the white pattern. Katazome  futon fabrics like this were produced in commercial workshops up until the mid to late 1930s.  It's in good condition with no holes or patches but there are some inconsistencies in the printing.
