Modern Katagami

This katagami  hand cut  paper stencil  is  treated with persimmon tannin to make  it  waterproof which gives it the distinctive brown colour.  Katagami are traditionally used to stencil a rice based resist on various ' katazome cotton and silk textiles.   This a larger than usual one  with a wonderful dynamic  modern design. 54cm x 75cm.  I'm not quite sure what  this has been used for - it's larger than a regular kimono stencil .  Stunning to frame  - or maybe use?  Mid - late 20th century.
