Sashiko Furoshiki Wrapping Cloth.
This furoshiki has been made from an old egasuri (picture ikat) trousseau futon cover panel with auspicious floral motifs ( ume plum, pine and others) as well as the words tsuru ('crane') and kame ('tortoise'), also auspicious, written in katakana script from right to left. The corners are reinforced with sashiko. The fabric in the middle is stretched from being well-used. There is one small hole. This probably dates from early 20th century during a period when sashiko stitching patterns for household textiles such as furoshiki or zokin cleaning cloths were available in kimono sewing books to people outside areas with local sashiko clothing traditions. 100cm x 110cm.
