Tsutsugaki Indigo Furoshiki

Late 19th - early 20th century hand-woven,  tsutsugaki dyed indigo cotton furoshiki wrapping cloth.  Approx 130cm x 160cm, it is a deep, rich, inky indigo.  The vibrabt kamon design is on both sides.  Large wrapping cloths like this were used for carrying and storing all manner of goods. With a large kamon family crest in the centre it may have been made to transport a bride's trousseau to her new home.  The katabami (wood sorrel)  kamon  has been hand drawn with a rice paste resist before dyeing (tsutsugaki method).   It is handstitched but at some time the top and bottom edges have been machined. The side edges have unturned selvedges. There is a small tear on the edge of one corner and some other minor imperfections but generally it is in excellent sturdy condition. It isn't sitting completely flat in the photos because there is some stretching in the centre showing it has been well used.

Price includes GST and postage within Australia.
